A well-behaved dog is about more than just knowing commands like sit, down, place, stay, and recall. It’s about the relationship between you and your dog. Without trust and respect first, even the best-trained dog won’t listen when it really matters.

That’s why I’m big on mastering the fundamentals inside the house before adding distractions or going outside. If the basics aren’t solid at home, expecting your dog to perform them at the park or around other dogs is like asking a 5th grader to take a 12th-grade math test — they’re going to struggle or fail every time.

Dogs learn in pictures. The “picture” inside your home (sounds, smells, sights) is completely different from the one at the park or on a busy street. You have to build the foundation in the easiest environment first, then gradually proof it in harder ones.

The most common mistakes I see owners make are:

• Not holding their dog accountable when they don’t follow through

• Never fading out the treats — so the dog only listens when food is involved

Strong home basics directly lead to better real-world behavior. Once sit, place, stay, and recall are reliable inside, it becomes much easier to add distractions, improve leash walking, reduce reactivity, and give your dog actual freedom.

Here’s a simple example: If you only practice “sit” a couple times a week with a treat inside the house, then take your dog to the park with all the new smells, sounds, and excitement and ask for a sit — they probably won’t listen. Not because they’re stubborn, but because they’ve never seen that picture before. You haven’t proofed it properly at home yet.

The commands themselves aren’t the most important part. It’s the process of teaching them with structure, discipline, and clear boundaries in a controlled environment, then expanding from there. That process shows your dog you are the leader — the one providing structure, discipline, and love. In return, they give you trust, respect, and love. That’s the real foundation of the relationship.
