Why E-Collar Training Is One of the Most Misunderstood (and Effective) Tools for Real-World Reliability

If you’ve been told that e-collars are just “shock collars” that hurt your dog, I get why you might be hesitant. A lot of people are unintentionally misinformed about them.
Here’s the truth from my perspective at Packline Canine Training: The e-collar is one of the best communication tools available because it’s the only tool that lets you effectively touch and communicate with your dog at a distance — completely hands-free and off-leash.
I only use high-quality e-collars from Dogtra. These aren’t one-mode pain devices. They have a wide range of stimulation levels (1–100), vibration, and sound options. I always start at the lowest level the individual dog can feel. For my own dogs, that’s usually between a 4 and a 10. You won’t even feel it on your own skin until level 15 or 20. Yes, if you crank it all the way up it can cause discomfort — but that’s not how I use it or teach it. A tool is only as good or bad as the person using it.
I don’t introduce the e-collar to teach new behaviors. The dog must already have solid foundation training on leash and understand the basic commands first. Any dog 4 months or older can start, but only after those basics are in place. The e-collar is for reinforcing what they already know, especially when distractions kick in.
When used correctly, the biggest benefits I see are total off-leash freedom for the dog and real peace of mind for the owner. You can hold your dog accountable in the moment, no matter where they are.
Far from hurting the relationship, a properly used e-collar actually strengthens the bond. Your dog learns that the rules and connection don’t disappear just because the leash is off. They stay connected to you in every situation, which builds deeper trust and respect.
If you’re ready for reliable off-leash control and better communication with your dog, let’s talk. Book your free evaluation with Packline Canine and we’ll see if the e-collar fits into your training plan.
